9 Module Online Webinar Series

A large number of our patients are children and they need special care. Children have specific illnesses that they are susceptible to, and it is a mistake to think of them as small adults. Their physiology is quite different. We need to take a different approach for our littler patients.

Here are some examples of how they are different:

  • Young children are highly susceptible to dehydration. They have a much larger surface area to body volume. And they have a much larger proportion of extracellular fluid (40% body weight compared to 20% in adults).
  • Liver function is immature with decreased function of hepatic enzymes. They are much less tolerant to toxins and medications, including natural medicines.
  • They have poor temperature control, especially when ill. In addition to having a large surface area to weight ratio, they also have poorly developed shivering, sweating and vasoconstriction mechanisms.
  • Low body temperature can cause respiratory depression, acidosis, decreased cardiac output, increased duration of action of medications, reduced platelet function and increased risk of infection.
  • Their blood brain barrier is poorly formed. Many drugs and toxins can cross the blood brain barrier easily.
  • ƒParental anxiety is readily perceived and reacted on by children.
  • Renal blood flow and glomerular filtration are low in the first 2 years of life due to high renal vascular resistance.
  • Children have thinner skin than adults. Their epidermis is thinner and under-keratinised, compared with adults. They have increased absorption of agents through the skin.

These and many other factors mean that we need to be skilled in the proper care of infants and children for best results, and for their safety. A high level of expertise or specialisation in paediatrics creates a busy and a very rewarding practice.

Dr Matthew Baral ND

Dr. Baral received his degree from Bastyr University in 2000 and he is currently chair of the department of pediatrics and associate professor of pediatrics at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. He has been supervising students on pediatric rotations and teaching pediatric medicine to medical students for the past ten years.

Matthew has been a Defeat Autism Now practitioner for seven years, and has trained with some of the most respected autism doctors in the world. He is a regular speaker at the Phoenix Autism Society of America’s annual conference.

Dr. Baral designed the first naturopathic pediatric residency training program in naturopathic medicine and serves as its director. His private practice focuses on primary pediatric care and autism, diet, nutrition, and environmental health. Dr. Baral is the medical director of the Hamilton Elementary School Clinic, the first free pediatric natural medicine clinic in Phoenix, which provides care to students in one of the poorest school districts in Arizona.

In addition to publishing research studies on the correlation between heavy metal toxicity and autism, Dr. Baral co-authored the first two books on integrative pediatric medicine: Integrative Medicine for Children and Integrative Pediatrics. He serves as the pediatric contributing editor to the Natural Medicine Journal and the International Journal of Naturopathic Medicine, and serves as president of the Pediatric Association of Naturopathic Physicians (PedANP).

Dr Sheila Kingsbury ND, RH (AHG)

Dr. Kingsbury has a focus on working with natural therapeutics for children. She is especially interested in educating the public on the importance of supporting lactating mothers and finding better approaches to childhood ailments.

Dr. Kingsbury is chair of the Botanical Medicine department at Bastyr University in Washington and teaches pediatrics courses in the School of Naturopathic Medicine. Sheila also has a private practice in Kirkland. She has recently served as a council member of the American Herbalists Guild and is a founding director of the Pediatric Association of Naturopathic Physicians. She received her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine degree from Bastyr University in 2003; her Master’s in Higher Education Administration and pre-med coursework at Seattle University.

Dr. Kingsbury received a teaching fellowship in 2003 and has lectured in a variety of settings on pediatrics, lactation and botanical medicine. Dr. Kingsbury has been a lactation consultant and a certified doula for more than a decade and has received the designation of registered Professional Herbalist from the American Herbalists’ Guild. She was also recently given the MaryAnn O’Hara Physician Leadership Award by the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington.

Dr Tamara Evans ND

Dr Tamara Evans is a 1999 graduate of Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington, and has over 17 years of experience in practicing primary care naturopathic medicine with a focus on pediatrics.

While always feeling an affinity towards working with the whole family, Dr. Evans began to feel a strong calling toward pediatrics after having her son, Max. She realized that by teaching healthy habits of care to children from the earliest age, she could make the biggest difference in the world. She also saw that treating children with a more gentle naturopathic approach was more appropriate for their bodies.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Evans taught “Advanced Pediatrics” at Bastyr University for 7 years, and she currently sits on the American Board of Naturopathic Pediatrics, an organization dedicated to the creation of a Naturopathic Pediatrics Board Certification Exam. Additionally, she was a founding Board member of the Pediatric Association of Naturopathic Physicians and has lectured to her peers both nationally and internationally.
