Dr Richard Brown
Dr. Richard P. Brown is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he obtained his medical degree 1977. He completed Psychiatry Residency and a fellowship in Psychobiology and Psychopharmacology at New York Hospital, Cornell University Medical College. The recipient of numerous awards, he has authored over 100 scientific articles, books, and book chapters on pharmacological treatments, clinical studies, and complementary and integrative treatments in psychiatry.
A strong interest in natural treatments developed long before medical school. Gathering medicinal mushrooms with his grandfather in the hills of Kentucky, was an introduction to the healing power of plants. Summer visits to Indian reservations in Wyoming opened a world of traditional treatments. As an adult, training in Yoga and Qigong brought further physical, mental, and spiritual development. All of these sources, traditional healing and conventional medical training, contribute to Dr. Brown’s understanding and his practice of medicine.
For more than 30 years Dr. Brown has taught and worked as a psychiatrist, particularly as a consultant and resource for other physicians and health care providers who need help to treat very complex, treatment-resistant patients. Through the years, he has developed novel treatments—herbs, nutrients, mind-body practices, and emerging technologies — for many who were unable to respond to conventional medicines.
Lara Briden ND is a naturopathic doctor with almost 20 years clinical experience. She has a strong science background, and first worked as an evolutionary biologist at the University of Calgary, before going on to qualify from Toronto’s Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1997.
After 5 years in general practice in rural Canada, Lara moved to Sydney and founded Sensible-Alternative Hormone Clinic, where she and her colleagues have treated thousands of women with hormonal conditions such as thyroid disease, PCOS, PMS and endometriosis.
Lara knows what can be accomplished with natural medicine. “Naturopathic medicine is strong medicine,” she says. “It’s not an alternative, weaker version of healthcare.” This is particularly true for hormonal conditions, which respond well to nutritional and herbal treatment. Lara has an evidence-based approach where possible, but also recognises the value of knowing “what works” in clinical practice.
Dr Ameet Agarwal ND
Dr. Ameet Aggarwal ND is a naturopathic doctor and psychotherapist (Gestalt, Family Constellations, EMDR) with years of experience treating physical issues, anxiety, stress, depression, abuse, relationship issues and also working with UNICEF, UN Staff and other large organizations.
He lectures around the world and has been voted top 5 speaker on 3 World summits. This has earned him the recognition of one of the top 43 naturopaths to follow. His book “Heal Your Body, Cure Your Mind” is considered to be one of the most comprehensive natural guides to anxiety and depression.
We’ve put together something that has been found to be really helpful for depression, anxiety and stress and is a good health practice in general.
Of all of our autonomic functions, breathing is the only one that we have ready control over. And when we practice specific breathing techniques, we signal to the brain that everything is ok, there is no urgency. This shifts us toward parasympathetic dominance which can quickly reduce tension and anxiety. It also rapidly creates a focused meditative state.
Click on the links below to download a PDF (2 different sizes, one for the printer) of four simple breathing techniques that you can easily use with every patient. They are especially helpful for those who are more sympathetic dominant. Here is what it looks like:
Download the .png (331KB) picture to use in emails here.
Download the smaller size PDF (576KB) for attaching to emails here.
Download the larger size PDF (5MB) for printing here.
Download the larger size PDF (5MB) for professional printers with 3mm bleed here.
We also have four complimentary guided audio breathing exercises that you are quite welcome to download and use courtesy of “The Body Guard”. These have been produced by Christine Barnes aka The Body Guard, and are used in her practice to relieve anxiety and depression, and to re-balance the para-sympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. Listeners will need to use earbuds or headphones to get the best out of them. They were produced with earbuds in mind.
